Is how we experience foreign cultures the reality?

When we are sailing on the sea in sunshine, we cannot see the stars, but we know they are there to guide us. Our culture is always with us. We have all been shaped by a certain culture – and this influences our view of other cultures. Imagine wearing glasses with green lenses! The world is green, right? For your partner wearing glasses with red lenses, the world is red. Would you argue with them about the colours of the world? Or would you rather offer to look at the world through their lenses?

Intercultural training

It’s not easy to realise what kind of glasses through which we are looking at the world, and it’s not easy to take them off or try on a new pair. But you can get into it! I’m offering three interlinked training courses. For me, it is particularly important to provide you with the theoretical knowledge about cultures and to add my own experiences in the modules of my Cross-Cultural Competence (CCC) course.

Scientifically tested

My scientifically tested trainings are based on the Xpert CCS® system of courses for Europe-wide certified cultural communication skills, developed by the LMU Institute for Cultural Communication in Munich. The Global DISC™ model, accredited by the International Coach Federation (ICF), combines personality types with cultural dimensions in a unique way. I also use this internationally recognised method in my teaching.

Who benefits from it?

The real question is: who doesn’t? Our lives are full of encounters with other cultures. Understanding cultural differences and learning how to communicate well across cultures will help you in your work, in administration, in schools and universities, and across the service sector.

What knowledge can you gain from the training?

You will understand your own culture better because you will know what its components are. You will be able to identify the origin of your sense of alienation when you are in another country. This will make it easier for you to explore new cultures. You will learn how to relate effectively in foreign cultures and use intercultural interaction techniques.

On a sailing boat, the captain gives detailed instructions to the crew before departure. Every sailor knows what they are doing and what their responsibilities are. Everything goes the way it’s supposed to, every move proves skill. They pull together. They literally pull together when the sail is hoisted by a collective effort. What’s important to know is that it’s not fuel or muscle power that propels them forward, it’s the wind that they catch to move forward. That’s why they need to check the weather before they leave port to see what they can expect en route.

How do teams work today?

In today’s VUCA work environment (VUCA is an acronym for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity), expectations, customer demands and even internal processes and systems change faster than the weather on the high seas. For the teams, this means routine is scarce, colleagues need to tune in and organise themselves again and again, and to do this they need to give each other constant feedback. For teams with mixed cultures, the challenge is even greater.

In harbour or on the high seas?

Where is your team now? Are you still anchored in the harbour? Are you a colourful congregation whose members hardly know each other? Is one sailor eyeing the other suspiciously? This is the Forming phase. Or are you already arguing about who will have the best cabin and who will have to scrub the deck? Then it’s the storming-norming phase, a time of clashes and the creation of common rules. Could it be that you’re already cruising upwind with a crew training for the championship (Performing and adjourning phase)?

How does this happen in everyday life?

Before you go to Hungary, you will get a well-prepared professional training. As a Hungarian, I am familiar with the characteristics and culture of my first home country – and I’ll share them with you. If your destination is another country in Eastern Europe, you will work with a partner with whom I have been in contact for many years and who can guide you upon arrival to your destination. You will quickly find your way in everyday life and at work and avoid misunderstandings and conflicts. This will make your time abroad a special experience – for you and for everyone who will accompany you.
